After accessing conditions across the district, Plano ISD announces that classes are rescheduled to resume tomorrow.
Plano ISD schools have been closed since Monday, due to freezing temperatures and ice accumulation. School closure was necessary since the district is unable to ensure safe travel across all routes and neighborhoods.
Faculty and transportation teams are working extensively to prepare for reopening by preparing bus depots, treating parking lots and walkways. Although main roads showed improvement on Wednesday, fluctuations in temperature and overnight refreezing caused inconstant icy spots. According to PISD, the school district relies on a tiered busing system. This means that a delayed start is not feasible.
Evaluating operational constraints and building functionality, the district concluded that safe transportation conditions for students and staff across the 100-square-mile area was not possible. Since the conditions proved to pose a risk to the area, PISD prioritized school closure to protect the school community. Additionally, the school may be held liable for any accidents that occur due to icy conditions on school grounds or during transit.
With temperatures near 50 degrees, travel conditions have improved significantly. In consultation with local emergency personnel, all district and campus activities will proceed as scheduled. PISD encourages students and staff to utilize extreme caution when commuting to and from school.
