Oscar Pistorius, the Olympic runner who was born without legs, has been charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, after she was killed on Valentine’s Day. Pistorius, who ran for South Africa during the Olympics in London with his two prosthetic legs, was an inspiration to many fans during the games. Although he did not medal in either of the two competitions he ran, he became an international icon and hero for those with disabilities. This past summer, he became the first amputee to run at both the World Championships and the Olympics. Pistorius fought to compete in the Olympics because some thought that his prosthetic legs gave him an unfair advantage. Pistorius has been dubbed, “Blade Runner” because his prosthetic legs have more “springiness” which would allow Pistorius to run even faster than an Olympic athlete. Pistorius and the South African track team advanced to the finals of the 4X400 relay, but the team did not place.
