What happens when the past refuses to stay buried? With its mix of horror, mystery and nostalgia, Showtime’s “Yellowjackets” has become one of TV’s most talked about dramas and is officially confirmed for its renewal for another season.
The co-creators of “Yellowjackets”, Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, took inspiration from “Lord of the Flies” and the elements from “Twin Peaks”, following a girl’s high school soccer team stranded in the wilderness after a plane crash. Switching plotlines towards their survival times and the long lasting trauma decades later, the show has been known for its genre-bending storytelling and haunting performances. Since its premiere in 2021, “Yellowjackets” have been growing its popularity. The series was praised for its sharp writing, unsettling horror atmosphere and presenting well-known talented actors like Sophie Thatcher, Ella Purnell, Christina Ricci and Melanie Lynskey.
After the cliffhanger in the finale of season three that was released on April 13th, the episode gained three million global viewers in seven days. Many viewers were left either distraught or satisfied with the long-awaited reveal of the “Antler Queen” and the truth behind the mysterious “Pit Girl”. The “Antler Queen” is a chilling figure first glimpsed in the pilot leading the group in the wilderness. Meanwhile, the “Pit Girl” is the name fans gave to a terrified teenager seen in the show’s opening sequence. Both figures have been surrounded over the years by theories created by fans on who is representing each character.
With those long-running mysterious finally unreleased, fans now have even more to look forward to: Showtime officially confirmed that “Yellowjackets” will return for a fourth season, with filming set to begin during the winter. Filming for Season four, the location will take place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, specifically using locations such as “The Bridge Studios” and outdoor locations like “Stave Lake, Belcarra” and “Golden Ears”. The directors left off in season three where the setting took place in a blizzard area. They had to wait until winter came around to continue filming.
According to TeenVogue, showrunners hinted that season four will discuss topics of emotions from the main characters and explore more trauma from their experiences. In interviews, Lyle and Nickerson emphasized that they will dive deeper into the aftermath of the characters’ traumatic experiences and how they will handle living back into their “regular” lives in the society after fighting survival daily for 18 months. They plan to explore further into the psychological complexities of each character, especially the show’s main character: Shauna Shipman.
Shauna Shipman is a fictional character in the series who was a part of the Soccer team and was early accepted into Brown University. Despite her accomplishments and integrity from her high school years, Shauna Shipman’s character has transformed from a seemingly sweet, quiet, teenager into one of the most complex figures in the show. Fans are eager to see how she continues to evolve in Season four as she holds onto both her past in the wilderness and the challenges of her adult life.
As “Yellowjackets” heads into its fourth season, the producers plan to delve deeper into the story of each characters’ trauma from their experience of surviving in the wilderness. Season four promises to deliver not just answers, but even more questions and theories that will keep audiences captivated long after the credits roll.
