Number 31 Strikes Again

Number 31 Strikes Again

31 is a very unlucky number in the world of sporting championships. The Warriors blew a 3-1 lead, along with the Cleveland Indians in the World Series. Also in the 2016 Alamo Bowl, the Oregon Ducks blew a 31 point lead to the TCU Horned Frogs after leading at halftime 31-0.

Now the lore of the number 31 lives on as the New England Patriots scored 31 unanswered points en route to a Super Bowl victory.

In the first half, the Falcons fired on every cylinder available. It seemed every time RB Devonta Freeman handled the ball he would rip off 8-to 10-yard gains. Matt Ryan let the ball hit the turf only one time and earned a 158.3 passer rating, which is perfect. Not opinionated perfection, statistical number-based perfection. The offense gained nearly 10 yards a play and the defense harassed Tom Brady with only four pass rushers, allowing seven players to be in coverage. After a interception for a touchdown by Falcons corner Robert Alford, the Patriots fates seemed sealed. Except many forgot who played quarterback on the other team.

On the second drive of the second half, Atlanta scored giving them a 28-3 lead; then came the onslaught. Patriots running back James White punched in a five-yard run, pushing the score to 28-9 after a missed extra point. The Pats then forced a quick punt and proceeded to score on a quick Danny Amendola pass. With the score now 28-12, palms started to get sweaty, doubts crept in, and the Patriots had the Falcons reeling. Then jaws around the world dropped.

Brady threw a pass while under pressure to Julian Edelman in a crowd of three other Falcons, the ball was bounced and bobbled, yet somehow ended up back in the hands of the former quarterback-turned-receiver from Kent State. Subsequently, the Patriots scored on another short touchdown run and a two-point conversion. At this point, Atlanta fans were dumbfounded but more frightened because of the same reason Patriot fans were smiling: Tom Brady.

In overtime, the Patriots drove right down the field and scored on a game-winning toss by James White. (Almost like what the Seahawks didn’t do two years ago.)

Tom Brady threw for a record 466 yards and the new England Patriots overcame a 25-point lead, another Super Bowl record busted (the previous record was 10). James White had three touchdowns on 139 total yards, Matt Ryan had 284 passing yards and two touchdowns, while WR Julio Jones concluded with four catches and 87 yards. Tom Brady, with five Super Bowls, now has more rings than 28 NFL franchises.

Goodness me, what a game. Atlanta storming out in front, Brady cementing his case for greatest of all time, Justin Bieber dancing, it makes one want more football. Don’t worry it will back soon.
