To Scream Or Not to Scream: Yelling vs. Encouraging

Since the dawn of modern sports, there has been a constant debate over which style of coaching works best: critiquing the players to fix the problem or coddling the players to fix the problem. Allowing the players to hear what they did wrong is very important and the more effective way to inform them is through yelling. Duke’s men’s head basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski and former Indiana and Texas Tech men’s head basketball coach Bob Knight are examples of coaches who yelled their way to the top, just to name a few. Raising their voices resulted in winning many championships .

The coaches who scream attempt to get the information into the player’s heads through their shouted comments and loud voices. Junior Reece Hansen is on the junior varsity basketball team, and he prefers coaches who scream.

“I like coaches who scream.” Hansen said, “I would rather get yelled at in practice than to make a critical mistake in a game.”

Coaches who scream get the job done; there is no other way to inform the players of their mistakes. When a coach screams, the players listen.

“In any sport, the coach who raises his voice is successful.” Reece said. “I want to be on the winning team.”

Since the dawn of modern sports, there has been a constant debate over which style of coaching works best: screaming at the players to fix the problem or inspiring the players to fix the problem. Calmly tweaking the mistakes that the team makes has proven to be more effective through examples like Kansas men’s head basketball coach Bill Self and former University of California, Los Angeles men’s head basketball coach John Wooden. These coaches inspired their players and because of that, won many championships.

Motivating the players to perform as best they can allows the players to learn from their mistakes without losing confidence or morale. Senior wide receiver Denim Sansom started for the varsity football team and believes that encouraging words and not discouraging words is key to successful coaching.

“Because Coach (Jeff) Jackson did not yell at me,” Denim said, “I wanted to make him proud through my performance on the field.”

Coach Jeff Jackson, the wide receivers coach for the varsity team, does not scream at the players according to Sansom.

“He is one of my favorite coaches that I have ever played for, ” Denim said, “because he doesn’t scream at us and wants to help us fix the mistakes that we make.”
